Basically, this is the ESPN version but based on BBS. Gonna run it as a feature every so often, with two new hosts each time. This time, Mark of New Orleans and Aaron of Seattle answered. I took this idea from XBA, hope it's ok Kris.
1. With the addition of Kevin Garnett, Orlando becomes a legit title contender.
Mark: Absolutely fact. With the addition of Garnett, I feel that Orlando has become the best team in the entire league. Going into the season, they had title aspirations, mainly due to their Wade-Bird duo. Throughout, they've dealt for a defensive force in Bill Laimbeer (to dominate in the blocks), and have now added perhaps the best player in the BBS for very little. Nemaja and Cliff were good players, but in comparison to KG, they're not even in the same stratosphere. Nobody can match the firepower that this starting lineup employs. When injured point guard Daniel Gibson returns from his injured torn hamstring, nobody can match up with them. Nobody. Not New Orleans, not Toronto, not even the Magic-led Bucks. This is the team to beat.
Aaron:Fact – KG gives Orlando the inside presence they have craved for sometime. Orlando has experimented with a number of players, even putting Bird there for sometime but now they have the best player in the league. With the inside presence of KG along with Wade/Bird on the outside, Orlando has sprung right up with NO, Tor, and Det as the top teams in the East. Amazing Orlando got him for Portland’s starting 4 and backup 3.
2. New Orleans is the best team in BBS
Mark: Fiction. Had this question been asked a few days ago, it would have been an undeniable 'yes'. But, Orlando was underachieving, yet still found themselves four games over .500 at the time of the Garnett deal. Though New Orleans has gone a cool 3-0 versus Orlando this season, the slate is wiped clean when "The Big Ticket" takes the court. Orlando is the team to beat in the BBS. However, New Orleans is second to me. With the young core they have as well as a developing bench, they might be the team to beat next year. But for now, KG is gunning for a title, and nobody will stand in his way.
Aaron: Fiction – Ask me this question in 2 years and it’s an easy fact. Right now though they are too young and will lose out to the more experienced teams in the playoffs. That being said don’t be surprised to see New Orleans take the East by storm come playoff time and win the East.
3. Herb Williams deserves ROY because of his team's wins.
Aaron: Fiction – Herb Williams has been a Godsend for the Pistons. A dependable big man who has put up some great number when JO went down with his injury. ROY? No. I feel a ROY should be on a winning team but it isn’t the biggest part of the award. A ROY is the best rookie in the league and Herb just hasn’t stepped up like Larry Nance or Zeke.
Mark: Pure fiction. The award is not most valuable rookie, it's the rookie of the year. Unlike the MVP, I think stats should be taken into account when deciding a winner (unlike the MVP, were a teams' W/L record is weighed equally on ones' stats). Herb has put up some nice stats (10+ points and rebounds per game) which, coupled with his great defensive ability (2+ blocks a game, 1+ steals per game), puts him up for consideration. My vote, if I had a vote, would go to Larry Nance of Dallas. He's putting up 18 points per game with 9 rebounds per, and has played tenacious D. He's the winner.
4. Forget Magic, forget Bird: Derrick Caracter is the best player 23 or younger to build around.
Mark: Fiction. Caracter is great. But, the player to build around right now is Magic Johnson. He could feasibly play three positions (point guard, shooting guard, and small forward) at an extraordinarly high level. He couldn't be more well-rounded. He's a fantastic scorer, using his above average ability both inside and out to score the basketball. His point guard abilities are off-the-charts good. He rarely turns it over, and racks up assists. He's a lockdown defender, and an underrated rebounder. I'm rambling, but it's the truth. At the same age of Caracter, he's more mature, and simply a better choice.
Aaron: Fiction – Magic Johnson is the best player 23 or younger. With B+ offense and A+ handles and defense he’s a force that will only get better with age. Bird is right there but Magic can do it all and do it well. Caracter is a fine young player with loads of potential but he’s not in Magic’s level. That’s not any disrespect but very few if any are in Magic’s level
5. Kobe Bryant is the best player in the league.
Mark: Fiction. Here comes that man again. My pick goes to Garnett. Bryant is an unbelievable talent (his offensive skills are matched only by Lebron's, and he is an elite defensive player). But, to pick against Garnett is as assanine as picking Herb Williams for rookie of the year based upon wins alone. Kevin is the most versatile player in the BBS. As a small or power forward, his shooting touch from the outside is unmatched. He's a tremendous defensive player, yet also gets down and dirty in the key, grabbing rebound after rebound. Perhaps the most efficient player in the league, Garnett consistently puts up top-of-the-line FG%'s. I just cannot pick against him (and that's without considering his leadership ability). He's the guy.
Fiction – Is he the 2nd best, yes. Kobe Bryant is a stud. The guy has carried the Piston-less JO team and kept them in the thick of things in the mighty Eastern Conference. I do feel Kevin Garnett is a hair better than Kobe due to his versatility and size. Kevin Garnett is avg 25/13 while Kobe is avg 30/8. Another reason I feel KG is just a tad better is the assists average of both players, they are roughly the same. For a shooting guard to be averaging the same amount of assists as a power forward, just shows you the versatility of KG.
As you probably noticed, their answers were the same! Next time, I'll do a better job of coordinating it, but I hope every likes the concept. Thanks a lot to Mark and Aaron for their great answers. Also, hit me up on AIM if you're interested in participating.
