Grizzlies take Carroll with the #3 pick in the draft
The lottery balls didn’t exactly reap the results GM Jerry West was looking for with a projected #1 pick. Yet with the third pick overall, the Grizzlies added quite possibly the best center prospect this year with Joe Barry Carroll. After a stellar career at Purdue, Carroll is expected to start in the middle for Memphis throughout the season. “JB Carroll is a guy that we are lucky to get even know he is no [Kevin] McHale. He knows he will relied on heavily this season, and should automatically bring stability to our frontcourt”, stated West at the press conference. Carroll, 22, is considered more of a scorer than defender but JB insists he will do his best to be a force on both sides of the ball. “I am excited to be here in Memphis. I am ready to do anything for my team to win, whether its improving on defensive side of the ball or on my rebounding”, says Carroll after formally being introduced to the media on Friday. He stands at 7’0, 225, which a good size for a center and allows him to be mobile throughout the paint. “I think he certainly has a chance to by the Rookie of the Year to be honest”, says Team President and owner Galo Pesantes. “We believe this kid has the potential to be a top center in this league for a very long time and we are happy he is here now”, added Pesantes.
Giddens heading to Memphis after deal on Friday
After the introduction, West also announced a deal with the Sacramento Kings that will bring swingman JR Giddens in exchange for seldom used guard Jiri Welsch, the number ten pick and a future first rounder. “Giddens is a very well balanced player. He is highly talented on the defensive end and his offense game continues to blossom every season”, added West. Giddens is expected to play behind two guard Richard Hamilton throughout the season, and matching up against some of the best guards in the West. Giddens’ agent, Jason Whitemore, was not available for comment. With the last pick in the draft, West picked up point guard Lorenzo Romar from the University of Washington. He is to join a rotation backing up Marcus Banks consisting of Bobby Jackson, and Chris Duhon.
Could Rodney White be with the Grizzlies as early as Sunday?
As free agency looms, the Grizzlies are still looking to fill out their last two roster spots. Rumors are persistent that West is looking to bring in another small forward and big man to complete the roster. Among some of the candidates include forwards Damion Jones, Rodney White and big men Brian Zoubeck, Joel Prybilla, Torin Francis, and Chris Wilcox. Any of those additions could be vital to another projected playoff run for the Grizzlies this season. Nevertheless, the Grizzlies will have to address their financial matters soon with being almost 20 million over the cap very soon. “As long as we are getting out business done on the court, I am willing to spend the money to get the talent we need to be successful”, stated Pesantes.
