It is the regular season and the Boston Celtics are at the bottom looking up...for now.
While teams will be competing for the BBS Championship the Celtics will be looking forward to finding out when they pick and who they pick.
"We hope to get in the top 4" said GM rommie, " If we don't we may look to move the pick."
The trade happy GM said who the Celtics want to grab in this 08 draft class.
"Well ovbiously everyone in lotto land wants Magic, or Bird. But for this team, we just may better off not to get in the top 2. We are very deep with guards and swingmen and I really want to add a center. Not a knock on Loren as he did a great job of giving us a defenseive presence in the middle but I feel with Bill Cartwright and James Donaldson avaliable this team could fill a huge need of getting a double double center."
When the GM was asked if there is anyone else the Celtics have interest in he said "Not really. I mean yeah we do like Michael Cooper and Mariuce Cheeks for example but if we fall out of the top 4 we will probably try and trade the pick. We are also pretty high on Bill Laimbeer, who we strongly feel is the best rebounder in this draft class. So we will just have to wait and see what happens."
Now on to the current roster.
The Celtics signed all but two of there many free agents to be to extensions just in time. Zhi Zhi Wang and Eduardo Najera are the only free agents. The GM made a comment on free agency in the off-season:
"I think that we just played great ball once we added guys around Caron and Carlos. Gerry, Curtis, and Larry Hughues did a nice job and Rashard just ended up being the glue for us to win. We defentily wanted to keep this team together."
Asked if either of the two free agents will be back in Boston rommie said "We'll just have to wait and see. Ovbiously there is only room for one of them after the addition of our draft pick so it defentily is possiable one of them will come back. If we make a trade or two and end up having roster space for them we will defentily have to look into re-signing them. We like them both."
Ahh trades. What a familar word in the Celtics organization. What does this GM have up his sleeve this off-season...."Well wouldn't you like to know! Seriously though I think it is pretty well known that we have 3 guys who we will look to trade. They are David West, Brian Cardinal, and Jared Jefferies. It would be a finanical move and rotation spot issue to get rid of any of them."
Now the next question was who interests Boston in a possiable trade for then?
"Well I like Jason Williams. He played here before. Has a shorter contract than David West giving us air to breathe when it comes to signing Rashard [McCants] to an extension next season."
Any others?
"Yeah. We do like Sam Cassell but I don't know that Miami would trade his soon to be expiering contract. Rafer Alston is another possiabilty. There are a few select players who fit the bill and I told those 3 to not get there hopes up to go to a team where they will play more. They might just have to stick it out here."
To sum it all up it sounds like the Celtics won't do anything major this off-season...for once. They really seem to like this team and the only big addition should be the draft pick.
We'll see how long that is the tune in the Celitcs offices.
