With a 2-8 start to the season and no one on the Celtics playing very good, the Boston Celtics are cleaning house and looking forward to the off-season.
Coach Knight said "Our play has been ridiculous. We look like strangers out there. Right now I think this season will be one to get the players familar with each other and myself and improve from game to game."
The Celtics traded Luol Deng to the Lakers for Anderson Varejo and sent Varejo to Orlando for J.R. Smith among others just a few games into the season. Now the Celtics have sent Luke Ridnour to Portland in exchange for Danny Fortson. Ridnour is owed $22,276,800 over the next 4 seasons including this season. Fortson signed a one year 4.5 million dollar deal with Portland in the offseason so that will give Boston more flexibilty in the off-season. It also will more importantly provide playing time to the younger guards.
The Celtics are rumored to be discussing a deal with Golden State which would send Speedy Claxton to the Bay Area for Memo Okur and Curtis Stinson. The Celtics also hold strong interest in a couple of free agent guards. They also are shopping Brian Cardinal and possiably Jonathan Bender and maybe even Eddie Griffin.
GM Rumschlag is not happy at all with the way the team has played. He said "This is ridiculous basketball being played right now. I am not saying I expected to being dominating or even winning half of our games but when you are losing and just playing flat out terriably and not competing there is no excuse for that in my book. I do not accept not going out there and competing so alot of guys will go. I usually try to stay calm in a situation like this and keep things out of the media but I see no reason to. Some of these guys are showing no heart and deserve no respect."
Harsh words from the GM. Some of the players have been interviewed and said the following:
Speedy Claxton said: "I was looking forward to coming back here. Playing a big part in a possiable suprise team. I really thought we had a shot at a top 3 spot in the division. I am just dissappointed that it all has crumbled. I love playing in Boston."
Luke Ridnour echoed those same comments. "I think that we were expected to do better, maybe not on the outside of the Celtics orgainization but inside we all expected more of this team. Players, coaches, the owner and GM alike. It is just dissappointing. Especially for me because I felt like I had a future in Boston."
Brian Cardinal said "I came here mid-way through last season I believe. I was excited. Adam signed me when he ran the Clippers and him and the whole organization there showed great faith in me. I was a third opition there. I want to give back more because he gave me the oppurtonity and gave me security signing me to a long term deal in the off-season."
The GM added "There may be some strange deals coming. As I know the deal with Portland was. But we are looking towards the future instead of the dissgusting present."
