"We're the Jazz baby. No reason to sweat it."
Apparently Utah GM Danny Carter isn't concerned about his teams future. Maybe he should be,
While the team appears to have a solid core very suited to their up tempo, run and gun style, the rest of the team aside from Terry, Jefferson, Marion and Martin leaves a lot to be desired. Average centre Chris Mihm, who appears to have peaked, along with an aging Bobby Jackson and IR bound Ron Mercer make up the only contracted players for the 2007 season which leaves the Jazz, with only minimum offers and an MLE to attract free agents, in quite a tight spot.
GM Danny Carter had this to say.
"Well, there ain't that many top tier free agents out there anyway, so the lack of cap room doesnt really hurt us that much. An LLE would've been nice but thats not a luxury we have right now. I'm just trying to concentrate on putting together a solid bench for next season."
So it appears building a solid bench is the main priority for the Jazz who were eliminated from the playoffs last year in the first round by the Portland Trailblazers.
"Well, yeah we lost, but it went to 7 games, and the first 3 games we weren't playing to our strengths." explained Carter. "We truly believe that, had we gone small ball from the start, we could've gotten further."
However, even without a bench and little free agent opportunities, the 2007 season could still be quite fruitful for the Jazz, given the apparent decline of the other top teams in the league. The loss of Stephon Marbury in Golden State, Shaq and Kobe exiting Detroit and the demise of the Bulls can only serve to give hope to other wannabe contenders.
After years of mediocracy, this franchise is believed to be hungry for success. Could 2007 be the year or will Utah have to wait longer for a taste of glory. Time will tell...
