To Trade or Not to Trade, that is the Question… or Rather, is it the Answer?
It’s been over a month (half a year in bbs time) since Hernando Courtright, current GM of the Philadelphia 76ers took over. After a not so mutual breakup took place between previous GM Jeremy and the owner of the 76ers, Hernando quickly stepped in and attempted to save the franchise from potential disaster. His first move as General Manager was fittingly a trade with notorious GM Lumley, which gave him the 5th and 6th pick of the 2011 draft, in exchange for the 3rd. This trade enabled the 76ers to draft both LaSalle Thompson and Ricky Pierce, two players that were highly regarded by the 76ers. LaSalle, who immediately started at the center position, was however recently traded in a deal that would turn out to become Eddy Curry and Maurice Cheeks, two players who Hernando and the 76ers fans feel will start for the next several years, and hopefully eventually lead them to a Championship. The 76ers ultimately added superstar Dwayne Wade after testing out other point guards such as Jamal Crawford, Gilbert Arenas, and Daniel Gibson.
With all the moves and trade talks, the 76ers are 2 games out of the 8th, and final playoff spot, with exactly 20 games left. With only days before the trade deadline, Hernando must ask himself an important question – to trade or not to trade? With a large payroll and lots of talent, Hernando has been approached countless times in regards to the University of Arizona product, Andre Iguodala. Hernando is sure to get sufficient talent and draft picks in return for Iguodala, but most likely the talent won’t be ready to step in immediately and replace Iguodala’s production at the 3 position. So the question raised is, should GM Courtright trade a player like Iguodala, a vital asset to the 76ers starting lineup, in exchange for improving the future? The question, which is usually the other way around, with GMs mortgaging their future in order to rent a superstar for less than half the season in hopes to make the playoffs is something that has been weighing heavily on Hernando, and with only days to spare, he will be making up his mind soon.
Obviously, after a disappointing season last year, Courtright wishes to solidify the respect of the fans, and it seems the only way to do that would be by reaching the playoffs. However, is that what the fans should want? It appears as if fans have already began recognizing the improvements of the team, so would 1 more year out of the playoffs be such a terrible thing if it was in order to strengthen several years of the future? It’s a question that plagues all of Philly fans, and with recent rumors of trades fans are paying close attention to see what Courtright will end up doing.
When asked about a possible trade scenario, Hernando said, “It’s definitely something I’d have to consider. I realized before taking the job that the whole team needed to be revamped, and I feel like I’m almost there.” Asked about what he’s looking for in a possible trade he said, “Young, talented, potential-filled athletes at the 2 and 3 positions… and picks, lots of picks.” He was also extremely adamant about denying trade rumors for Kevin Love saying, “The 76er family believes that Kevin Love will be a 76er for years to come.” It appears that any trade involving Kevin “citizen of brotherly” Love will have to be a jaw-dropper, in order to pry the young stuff power forward away from Philly.
Overall, the 76ers have made vast improvements compared to last year’s squad. The team has got both more depth, and more talent that last years team, including three worthy PG options, superstars at both the SG and SF position, an up and coming PF who is already putting up 15 and 10 a night, and a recently acquired center who will be a force in the paint for several years to come. But what could be most important, he has done this while making the team significantly younger. The fans have expressed their gratitude to Courtright by coming to more home games than last year and saluting him with chants of Extension! Extension!, during time outs.
Only time will tell how everything will pan out for the 76ers, but the future looks bright, so 76ers fans, buy your sunglasses and enjoy the ride.
