Talented guard has fans thinking “Green”
Green was the 5th pick overall in the 2006 BBS Draft; now entering his fifth year.
A few years ago, the Bulls had a young player who many thought was set as their Franchise Player for the next few years in LeBron James. But since that didn’t work out, the Bulls put their franchise tag on Baron Davis. However, the Bulls decided to move the tag to someone else. Just last offseason, the Bulls immediately dealt Marvin Williams (after acquiring him from Miami) along with Quentin Richardson to Dallas for a young talented guard, Gerald Green.
When the Bulls acquired Gerald Green from Dallas, everyone in Chicago believed that they had found their Franchise Player for the future. It was obvious. Green was a young spectacular player who had drawn comparisons to Tracy McGrady, who played with Chicago for a couple of years before being dealt to Denver. When Green was shipped to Chicago, he added 10 more pounds of muscle. He had to gain more pounds to be able to match other Small Forwards and Shooting Guards in the league. When Green started to practice for his new team, the Bulls labeled him as a Shooting Guard more than a Small Forward despite playing the three position most of his career in New Orleans. Green was also a better defender at the two.
When the offseason moved into Training Camp, Green’s offensive game had improved even better. During Preseason, his ability to get to the rim and knock down outside shots looked very consistent. Despite the Bulls 6 and 9 record, Green averaged 23 PPG. The Bulls coaching staff and players were really impressed with their young 2 guard. One player on the team described Green as “a superstar in the making since Tracy McGrady.” That one player was Baron Davis, who played with McGrady a few years ago. “There is no question in my mind why he shouldn’t be compared to T-Mac early in his career. He has the abilities and size like Tracy. It’s just the matter of time of waiting for Green to come out as a great player in this league. He’s only 23 and has a bright future ahead of him.” said Davis.
When the regular season tipped off, Green is averaging a career high 23.3 PPG after 15 games. Not only his points are up, but his rebounds and steals are up as well. Along with Green’s career high in points, he is also averaging a career high 8.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals. So far so good for this young talent. During this stretch, the Bulls played Washington at home where Green litted up the Wizards by putting up a career high 41 points in 44 minutes. The Bulls won that game dramatically, 147-86. The win also marked their Franchise high in points. Green described the game, “a game to be remembered as a player and as a team.”
Although the season just started, every fan in Chicago should be excited for the next couple of months, and there is no doubt Green will be on everyone’s mind from here on out.
