The Makings of a Champion
Does defense win championships? Does hard work get you a championship under your belt? What does win you a championship?
The Boston Celtics are slowly resembling a team that can challenge within a few years. The team is a perfect mix of everything including; scoring, defense, youth, veterans, and the bottom line—talent.
Darius Washington heads up the team at the point being only 23 and being in the league for five years already. He witnessed heartbreak back at Memphis, in one the most publicized incidents of choking ever. He is determined to lead the young and feisty Celt’s to the first championship since the Bird era. He is a balanced guard averaging 21, 7, and 6 a game.
The Celtics started two rookies at the swing positions this year. Mark Aguirre, most notably being recognized for being aquired midway through the Pistons first championship season, was acquired halfway through the season by General Manager Nathan. His statistics are not that flattering, but in the second half of the season on Boston, he went from 7 and 3 averages to 12 and 6 averages on the season which is a considerable increase.
Orlando Woolridge had a good rookie campaign scoring 15 a game at the small forward spot. Woolridge proved to be a prolific scorer notching 40 points in one game. He also proved how while rounded he is while also dishing out 15 dimes in a game. Aguirre and Woolridge look to be the swingmen of the future for this youthful Boston franchise.
Although positions 1-3 are locked down by young studs, the post players have proved little. The only decent post player was Shareef Abdur-Rahim who is an unrestricted free agent and is likely to be let go this off season. The Celtics started a post tandem of Danny Schayes and Rick Mahorn the second half of the season. Mokeski, the starter before all-star break, proved to be a viable option as the backup center. The Celtics, having 34 million dollars in cap room, are targeting a defensive minded bigman in free agency. This could put the cap on a playoff team next season.
GM Nathan said, “Yah, we are improving day in and day out. Next season, with a little more experience, we hope to provide yet another option in the East as a playoff contender. We hope to take home a winning record and make the playoffs. This would be a huge accomplishment.”
