Another season, at least in managements eys, of underachievement. Injuries to Isiah Thomas and Samuel Dalembert throughout the season definetely hurt, but the team had the depth, in Sebastian Telfair and a mixture of big guys to stay competitive. Telfair did a great job, but the interior was left to only Amare Stoudemire, and he couldn't do it by himself, with occasional help from Joe Smith.
The team picked up TayShaun Prince 35 games into the season and the teams play picked up, they were 13-22 before the pickup, and 22-25 after his pickup, in frairness to the team, Thomas was injured for 18 games before Prince was aquired. Prince shot around 45% and averaged about 13-15 ppg.
Amare got signed to the extension that should gaurentee his career will be spent in Clipper land, and responded, having his highest PPG in 3 seasons, the biggest difference was that he made his free throws at a better rate (72%, compared to 65.6% last season) this season. He, Mike Woodson and Thomas combined for half of the teams points per game (56.9 ppg) this season. Prince and Samuel Dalembert combined for about 26 more of the points per game, as far as the starters go. The team will look to Brian Johnson to make up some of the scoring void left by the departure of Joe Smith, but may also use the draft and free agency to do that.
Free agents are Joe Smith, Matt Haryasz, Craig Shelton, and Lowes Moore. They all will be let go in all likelyhood.
Keys for next season will be, getting a good backup center, getting Samuel Dalembert signed to an extension, making a decision on wether or not ot re-sign Zarko Cabarkapa, and probably trading Sebastian Telfair, and getting maximum value for him.
