"The Future Is Bright" has been the Phoenix Suns motto since GM Tony Rea took over two seasons ago, and with a young core of Theus, Rodriguez, and Williams that appears to be true. But the price to keep this core intact may end up costing the team. Yao Ming is owed roughly 32 millon over the next two seasons as his contract expires the same year of Reggie Theus. Also with the new rule of one extension offer per year its obvious who Phoenix would use it on, Theus. Thus making Yao a free-agent.
Now it seems logical that instead of getting into a bidding war and having to over-pay Yao Ming just to get him to stay in Phoenix they should look for a new suitor now, while his stock is still high. Although Yao still is among the league leader in rebounds and blocks, his stats over the past couple of seasons have fallen. This could be due to the consistency that Theus has been able to produce recently.
Although Phoenix managment is hesitant on pulling the trigger on a trade that would send the dominant center out of Phoenix, they're definatley willing to hear offers.
"We feel that Yao can help any potential playoff team compete, and we also think that their is a lot of good young talent out their that we could get in return for Ming. But when your dealing with a player of this caliber its always best to think about every offer and wonder if this is the best move for your team." Rea said after a Suns press-conference.
Depending on what Phoenix could get in return for Yao, this might be such a bad move. The Suns currently own Memphis (a guaranteed lottery team) 1st round pick for this years draft. The top ten for this draft show a lot of potential, but nothing of what Yao has already proven. If Phoenix can get a young up-and-coming Center and maybe som good picks for the upcoming draft then this could be a great move for Phoenix future, but beware Phoenix this is dangerous territory.
