Bulls Acquire Hansbrough/Varejao From Orlando Magic
Hansbrough was the 4th overall pick in the 2007 BBS Draft / Varejao was named the 2009 Sixth Man of the Year
The Chicago Bulls have acquired Tyler Hansbrough and Anderson Varejao from the Orlando Magic for Nemanja Aleksandrov, it was announced earlier today by General Manager C.C. Christian.
“I am extremely excited to add a player of Tyler’s background to our team,” said General Manager C.C. Christian. “He is a great young talent in our league and when you couple him with the young talent we currently have on the roster, I can’t wait to see them mesh as a unit. Tyler is poised to become one of the bright stars in the Eastern Conference. He is a very easy going person and Chicago will soon learn how important it was for our management group to finalize this deal. This is an exciting time for the Bulls. Tyler is going to be a part of the Bulls for a long time. I feel he'll become a very good player in the future. He's got the size, intelligence, youth, and quickness to be a phenomenal player in the league. As for Nemanja, he had a nice short tenure here, but we wish him the best of luck in the future."
Hansbrough was originally selected by the Boston Celtics with the 4h overall pick in the 2007 BBS Draft as an early entry candidate
Hansbrough averaged 11.9 points and 9.3 rebounds in his four-year career with the Boston Celtics, NO Hornets/Sacramento Kings/LA Lakers, and Orlando Magic. Hansbrough, who was the fourth high school player selected in the 2007 BBS Draft, had career-highs in points (12.8) and rebounds (9.8) during the 2008-09 season. A 6-9 forward, Hansbrough posted a career-high 33 points and 17 rebounds during his career with the Sacramento Kings.
“I’m really excited to know that I will be a member of this team for the next several years,” said Hansbrough. "I'm thankful for Mr. Christian’s trust and giving me the opportunity to play in Chicago. I can put more energy into this season and future seasons now that the (contract) matter has been put aside.”
Not only the Bulls acquired Hansbrough from Orlando, but also acquired forward/center Anderson Varejao.
"Anderson Varejao is a versatile player who provides a different dimension to our frontcourt positions and will help us in many ways on both ends of the floor," Bulls General Manager C.C. Christian said. "He is a proven inside scorer and has shown success rebounding the ball. We look forward to having him on our roster."
Varejao averaged 6.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and was named the Sixth Man of the Year last season for the Magic.
The 6-10, 240-pound forward has appeared in 184 career games with Memphis and Orlando with career averages of 9.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 26.0 minutes. His top scoring season came in 2008-09 when he averaged a career-best 13.5 points and 10.3 rebounds with Memphis.
