Rookies and Upcoming Rookies
Jeff Moroni
Yes it is very early in the season, but I think I have an idea what rookies are going to dominate for years to come in BBS. Let’s take a look.
Magic Johnson: 9 games into his career he is posting great number for any ordinary NBA player. 18 points 6 rebounds and 7 assists per night not too bad for any point guard in the league. Johnson and Blatche could possibly carry this team to .500 mark this season, but don’t count on playoffs unless a miracle happens. One more season and then they could be there. Expect Johnson to be on the All-Rookie 1st team this season.
Larry Bird: The missing piece to the puzzle. Bird is completely playing out of his mind. Averaging nearly 30 points 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Already ranks top 5 in the league in scoring as a rookie! You better believe he has my vote for rookie of the year. I’m expecting the Magic to stay on pace and find themselves in the playoffs this year. If they can somehow get a center then you better watch out this team looks like they could become scary, fast. Bird should be right along side Johnson once they name the All-Rookie 1st team.
Bill Cartwright: Already leads the team in scoring and rebounds per game. Nearly 20 points and 13 rebounds should expect this Pacer to be among the leaders in the rebounding category this year. Looks to be one of the few big men in this years class that can do damage fast. Would be smart for Indy to build around Rudy Gay and Cartwright this upcoming off-season. Watch out for Indiana this off-season they have a lot of cap room and expiring players, they’ll for sure be making a splash in free agency. If Bill can continue to produce these star numbers he should find himself among the 5 players named to the All-Rookie 1st team.
James Donaldson: Has yet to his touch in New Orleans only averaging 13 and 10. Yet that is still impressive for a rookie, just not this rookie class of over achievers. Should have a double-double by the end of the season too. Will have it hard to take shots due to the fact that he is playing behind, Mayo, Livingston and Marion. Doesn’t show a lot of potential which means expect years of 13 points and 10 rebounds. My guess is he would be a 2nd or 3rd team All- Rookie.
Michael Ray Richardson: Now in Miami it looks like Richardson is fitting in perfectly. He is averaging near a double-double in points and assists. Isn’t a real scoring threat but makes up for it on the defensive end. Shows unlimited amount of potential and should star in this league within a few seasons. Miami GM looks like he is in the process of re-building so expect him to build around Richardson. Would predict Richardson to be a 2nd team All-Rookie.
Bill Laimbeer: Already averaging a double-double in Boston, but not doing as well as I thought he would. Should get more scoring opportunities in Boston considering they are lacking a serious scoring threat. Next few years should be re-building years. Look for them to build around Laimbeer and McCants. If they can trade Alston and get some cap room then maybe they could be a playoff team next year, but don’t count on it. Great GM, but he is just in a difficult situation right now, should still be able to make the best of it with a nice pick. Laimbeer looks like he could be on the 2nd team All-Rookie.
Mo Cheeks: Ok I could understand taking him with the 12-15th pick but he isn’t a top 10 pick in my opinion. Sure he has great handles for a rookie and great defense too, but offensively he is lacking. I know the GM is very excited about Cheek’s potential, but I don’t really see him doing anything special anytime soon. Maybe I’m wrong, but we’ll see. Expect Mo Cheeks to squeeze into the 3rd team All-Rookie.
Mychal Thompson: Not doing too much in Denver right now. Won’t see much time behind Chris Kaman. Next season could be his year to shine unless Denver finds cap relief for this off-season. Denver should have a pretty good pick this year in the draft and could start re-building. Don’t really have a go-to scorer now that Tracy McGrady was traded. Jefferson might have already hit his peak and is on his way down, unless some magic happens. Don’t expect Thompson to be making any All-Rookie team this year.
Reggie Theus: Great pick for Sacramento. Already is averaging 16 points for the Kings. He should find the ball in his hands a lot this season due to the team not having any scoring threats. Sacramento should build around Theus and Sean Banks [if they can re-sign him]. They bought out Ilgauskas contract which should help with tons of cap room this season. They’ll look pretty good next season as long as they can sign a few big free agents. If they can some how get a good center and power forward this team could possibly see themselves in the playoffs due to a very weak conference. If Theus can continue on this scoring tear then he could find himself on the 1st All-Rookie team.
Michael Cooper: Not starting right away and for good reasons. He is playing behind Juan Dixon who is a little bit better, but expect Cooper to start around mid-season in Milwaukee. Shows great potential and has a nice outside game for a rookie. The young Bucks are possibly lottery bound for another season, but if they are expect it to be their last lottery season for awhile. They have all the right tools to turn this into a dominant team in the next few years. Cooper won’t be on a rookie team, but it doesn’t mean he won’t shine in later years.
Cliff Robinson: This Sun is almost averaging a double-double in Phoenix along side Drew Gooden. He is putting up 16 points and 9.9 rebounds per which is showing signs in Phoenix that the pick they selected is producing right away. Phoenix is in a big hole right now and should probably see the number 1 overall pick this coming year. Robinson is here for the future and there is no reason why he can’t shine. Robinson could possibly squeeze into the 1st All-Rookie team.
Sidney Moncrief: Sidney is playing plenty of minutes [33.8mpg], but is not performing very well at the 2. Though he is playing behind Bird, Wade and Webber. With these minutes he should develop in no time. He has excellent potential and was a nice selection at 12. Could possibly make the 2nd team All-Rookie, but that might be a push. Expect Moncrief to be a very good player in upcoming years.
Predictions:
All-Rookie Team:
C: Bill Cartwright
PF: Cliff Robinson
SF: Larry Bird
SG: Reggie Theus
PG: Magic Johnson
Rookie of the year:
Larry Bird
Already averaging super-star numbers for a pretty good team. Top 5 in the league in scoring already as a rookie. Almost 30 points and pulls down 8 rebounds game easily. Will star in this league for years to come. The only competition I see would come from Magic Johnson. If Magic can manage to average a double-double then he would possibly walk away with the trophy. My prediction has Bird winning the ROY award this year.
Upcoming rookies:
Kevin McHale:
Height: 6’10”
Weight: 210
Position: Power Forward
This power forward out of Minnesota should be the 1st player taken off the board. He has an exceptional inside game for a rookie and shows that he can challenge the ball handler with tremendous defense. Rebounding is not his strong suite, but with unlimited potential this shouldn’t be a problem. In this unusually weak draft expect McHale to be one of very, very few rookies who will turn into great players.
Kiki Vandeweghe:
Height: 6’8”
Weight: 220
Position: Small Forward
This UCLA Bruin will shoot whenever he touches the ball. Has good inside moves and a nice soft touch from behind the 3 point line. Only problem is his defense. Doesn’t show great defensive skills yet. Has great potential to become a very good player in BBS. Shows great potential for any team that picks him. Should be a top 3 player taken this year.
Darrell Griffith:
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 190
Position: Shooting Guard
Right out of Louisville Griffith should do very well anywhere that he goes. Has a nice inside game along with a pretty good outside game. Plays excellent defense against some of the top college players. Has good solid handles for a shooting guard and can even rebound pretty well too. Should be a top 3 pick this year, unless someone sneaks up by the time the draft rolls around.
Mike Gminski:
Height: 6’11”
Weight: 250
Position: Center
This isn’t a great draft for either the centers or the point guards. Gminski is probably the best center in this draft. Shows that he can get to the basket, but finishing is another story. Doesn’t have the greatest inside game or rebounding skill for that matter. Though plays great defense. Will be a solid backup in this league due to the fact he isn’t as big as some of the centers now. Gminski still should be the top center taken off the board.
Wes Matthews:
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 170
Position: Point Guard
Doesn’t have a very good scoring touch at all. Oddly enough he has a better inside game than outside. Decent ball handles for a rookie. Plays pretty good defense, but could defiantly toughen himself up a bit. If your looking for a point guard, then this draft is not for you. Matthews looks like he is the best point guard coming up and it doesn’t look like he’s going to do very much.
This upcoming draft could be one of those drafts where a star player is taken in the second round. There are just so many questions on how well some of these players will perform. All the players look very weak, except for a few. They have lots of potential, but what draft doesn’t? If I had a few draft picks [actually I do] I would look about trading those, unless they’re going to be a top 3 pick. Anything beyond a top 3 pick would be a risk pick. But hey who doesn’t like taken a chance when the player they take could turn out to be a star?
That is my BBS Insider for this week. Next week I’ll look into “players who are overpaid and aren’t worth a dime and also under paid players who shine.” Also I will be doing another trade block. If you could please send me your trade block my email, Fall0utBoy220@gmail.com or by AIM Fall 0ut Boy 220 or PM me on the board would be best probably. Stay tuned for next week.
