Your star player has a career year, leads your team in points, rebounds, blocks and warrants MVP considerations. Surely logic would prevail and you would'nt hesitate to offer him a new contract?
Now factor in that the player in question is 32 years old, and the contract you would be offering would be worth at least 75 million and 6 years in length. Does that change things? You bet it does.
This will be an interesting year in Utah due to the new rules concerning contract extensions. GM Danny Carter must decide whether to let arguably the best expiring player hit the free agent market, extend him with another max contract, or simply trade him before the season ends and pass the problem on to someone else. Rumour around the league has it that the departure of Martin would be beneficial to the Jazz in some ways as it would provide rising star Josh Boone with more minutes, however, some people argue that you just cant replace a player the calibre of Kenyon Martin, who was acquired for Jamaal Magloire, Rudy Gay and an early first round draft pick back in 2006.
There has also been rumours of Martin trades swirling around the front offices in Salt Lake City but Carter refused comment on players he is targeting but one staff member quoted that "there could be a blockbuster on the way"
Martin has never been considered a legitimate #1 scoring option but has been forced to play that role due to him being the best fit for it, and Ben Gordon not being ready for it. Could this be the year where Ben steps up and KMart thrives in a supporting role or will we see another year of great stats but a low field goal percentage due to other teams defences zeroing in on him?
Time will tell
