BBS Deadline Deals
By- Grimes---BBS Press
*Disclaimer- This is simply analysis by myself. I could always be wrong and teams can always get better later on or through another deal.
We will highlight the most significant six deals that went down on deadline Sunday in BBS. Many teams were buyers and a number of teams were sellers on the market. Overall, there weren’t many moves that were unanticipated but many will shake up the upcoming playoffs.
MIAMI HEAT deals Lamar Odom to CHICAGO BULLS for Shawn Marion
Why Heat Did It- Marion is the one of the best defensive SF in the league beside the fact he rebounds like a madman already. Odom was a better player overall, but the Heat felt they could get more later for Marion which they did later in the day.
Why the Bulls Did it- Odom is one of the few players on the Bulls now that won’t demand the ball. He rather distributes it, rebound, and play defense which is exactly what the Bulls needed.
Verdict- Both teams get pretty much what they need at the end. Bulls get younger, overall better player who can play three positions pretty well but Heat get better deal in the end. ADV- EVEN
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS deal Steve Francis to TORONTO RAPTORS for Sebastian Telfair, Wally Szczerbiak, 2011 first rounder.
Why the Clippers Did It- The Clips season is simply over so the departure of Francis for later cap relief, a younger point guard and first rounder is the right way to go. They still have a good nucleus of young players so don’t sleep on the Clip Show.
Why the Raptors Did It- Francis later gets dealt again later in the day much like Marion so in the end the Raptors get what they need as in terms of an upgrade at SG.
Verdict- Clips lose a dynamic point guard in Francis but get better in the future. Raptors later get Vince Carter in a deal for Steve Francis. In the end, Raptors add to an already star studded roster. ADV- Raptors
MIAMI HEAT deals Josh Childress, Julius Hodge, 1st Rounder-2015-Sonics to BOSTON CELTICS for JR Smith, Ronald Murray.
Why the Heat Did It- This is second of three deals for a busy Heat team on the deadline. JR Smith is younger and more dynamic version of Childress and much more economically friendly as well.
Why the Celtics Did It- Beantown is under new management so they started to clean house quickly and rebuild. Childress is to play SF and it is his job to lose as far as playing time. Celtics also gain 2015 pick which adds depth in the future.
Verdict- Heat save some money and add more depth. Celtics rebuild and get similar player back. ADV- even
SACRAMENTO KINGS deal Derrick Rose, Richard Jefferson to MILWAUKEE BUCKS for Vince Carter, Shawne Williams, Twolves 1st 2010.
Why the Kings Did It: This sets up another deal where the Kings acquire Steve Francis and Al Harrington later in the day from Toronto. Shawne Williams takes the place of Richard Jefferson for the Kings at the 3 and Francis takes Rose’s spot in the lineup at point. Kings management must have seen something special in Shawne Williams to be considered an adequate replacement for Jefferson.
Why the Bucks Did It: First thing the Kings had to do was move Magic to the 2, and have Rose run the team at point. Jefferson would take the bulk of the minutes at small forward as well. Bucks may also feel that Magic must be able to be a better scoring option at shooting guard than at point. The Bucks’ backcourt can now boast with the most assists in the league by far, now they just need to produce some points.
Verdict: This trade shocked many people including this reporter when the trade broke. The Kings traded quite possibly the best point guard in the league at his age since he still a teenager. Although, Rose is quite overpaid, he will live to well worth that contract when its up. Bucks bolster their backcourt, now we wonder if Magic and Rose can coexist handling the ball. ADV- Bucks
SACRAMENTO KINGS deal Vince Carter to TORONTO RAPTORS for Steve Francis and Al Harrington.
Why the Kings Did It: Seeing that Rose had been dealt, Kings nabbed Francis as their floor general from the Raptors after previously being dealt from the Clippers. Al Harrington has still not logged a minute this season so he is considered a non factor in the deal.
Why the Raptors Did It: Quite simply, Carter is better fit to play starting shooting guard than the incumbent Francis. He returns to his original stomping grounds and to a team that could use another legitimate scorer.
Verdict: The Kings must believe Francis at the rip age of 32, can pull it together and be a better point guard than Rose. Francis is still due over 80 million over the next three seasons in which he’ll turn 36 when he a free agent. The Raptors could not have done any better this deadline by acquiring Francis and then shipping him for Carter. They got just what they needed and in time for the playoffs. ADV- Raptors
MIAMI HEAT deals Shawn Marion to SAN ANTONIO SPURS for Brandan Wright, Joe Johnson, Corliss Williamson.
Why the Heat Did It: They drop more money with this deal and fill more holes as well. Joe Johnson will be an adequate replacement for Marion although not superior defensively. Wright will take his place in the middle where the Heat seemed to be pressed for help for.
Why the Spurs Did It: The Spurs have allowed nearly 106 points a game this year. Marion could be a great addition is able to stifle some top scorers in the league in this last part of the season and in the playoffs. Marion is close to Johnson in terms of scoring but is better overall than Johnson in all other areas.
Verdict: The Heat complete the day with a successful run to build their team with young players. Brandan Wright should be a great addition to the frontcourt that already has Derrick Caracter. The Spurs have to go back with Troy Murphy at center, where he has played before but not as strong defensively as before. San Antonio must have felt Marion was worth the pickup and refused to want to resign Wright to a lucrative deal. In addition, Johnson could slightly worse than Marion at the quarter of the cost of Marion which is something the Heat can deal with. ADV- Heat
