I'm starting a regular trade analysis article. I hope to do one every week or two, probably around Friday or Saturday. I will pick three of the trades from the past week or weeks and review them.
1. Sacramento and Dallas
Raef Lafrentz, Lawrence Roberts, 2006 First (PHX) to Sacramento for Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner, and 4 second round picks.
The Kings pick up a F/C in Lafrentz that they then traded for Erick Dampier. Dampier will provide them a solid force in the middle. The Mavs picked up what they were looking for the entire season, a true #1 option. Since coming to the Mavs, Stackhouse has led them team to a 3-1 record. Dallas also picked up four second round picks, while giving up just a first rounder to Phoenix, a contender.
Winner: Dallas, especially if they can re-sign Stackhouse to a multi-year deal.
2. Sacramento and New York
New York sends Gary Payton, Trenton Hassell, and Bostjan Nachbar to Sacramento for Marquis Daniels, Donyell Marshall, Frank Williams, and New Jersey's 06 first rounder.
New York sends veteran point guard Payton to the Kings for a young swingman (Daniels) that the Knicks
hope to use as a scorer in the defensive scheme. The Kings will be able to use Payton in an attempt to get their season back on the right track.
Winner: Even, both teams get what they need for this season. Payton will help the Kings win some games this year, and Daniels and Marshall will give the Knicks some points down the stretch this year.
3. Sacramento and LA Clippers
Sacramento sends Rafer Alston and Slako Vranes for Tayshaun Prince and Zhi-Zhi Wang.
Both teams trade young players signed to long term deals, as well as developing big men. Alston gives the Clippers the true point guard that they want, so that they can move Francis to shooting guard. The Kings pick up a tall small forward who is known for his defense and potential to score 13 and grab 8 boards a game at least.
Winner: Clippers take the advantage in the deal, mainly because they pick up a true point guard that may help them contend in this year's season. The Kings still made out nicely here, picking up Prince who is signed for 4 years after this season.
I will do another article like this when three to five more significant trades have been made.
