The Boston Celtics are off to a blazing start compared to previous starts. The Celtics are 14-12, second in there division, and holding down the 8th playoff spot. Five of the twelve losses came in games within 4 points. The Celtics could very well be 19-7 with a few bounces going there way in these games.
The Celtics have been the laughing stock of the league the past two years. In a post last year, many General Managers thought the Celtics had 0 chance of making the playoffs this year. In a poll, the Celtics were projected to finish last of any team in the league. Another poll rating the best backcourts garnered 0 respect for Washington and Aguirre.
After the poll was brought to Darius’ attention, he decided that he would have to prove everybody wrong again, like after the two free throw misses back at Memphis. Washington is now in the top 10 in points and assists per game. He is averaging career best numbers such as nearly 27 points a game along with 9 dimes a game. Washington scored over 30 points nine times this season.
Mark Aguirre, whom was acquired last season, is averaging a remarkable 22 and 7, which is up from 12 and 4 as a rookie last season. Aguirre is a perfect complement for Washington in the backcourt and provide a combined 50 points 12 rebounds and 12 assists a game. Aguirre has recently been injured, and Alex Legion stepped in and put up over 20, 3 times. Aguirre should return soon, and the backcourt trio of Washington, Aguirre, and Legion will be one of the tops in the league despite what other General Managers say.
The only disappointment for the 2012 season is the unfulfilling season for Orlando Woolridge. Orlando has not shown any improvement over his rookie season in any statistical category and now has taken the backseat to the free agent acquisition Marquise Gray. Nonetheless, Gray and Woolridge have complemented each other nicely at the small forward spot.
The big men for the aspiring Celtics have been sub par this season. Macklin has only put up 7 and 10, which has not exceeded the expectations that General Manager Nathan had in the off season. Schayes and Mokeski have split time at the center position, neither doing enough to win the job. A third center may be brought in by Nathan to challenge the two young centers to keep their spot on the team. Nathan is glad he did not waste money on Darrell Arthur, who has had even a worse season than Macklin.
Nathan was stated as saying, “I am very glad about our offseason this past year. We signed three tremendous players who have helped a lot, without spending all of our cap room. Gray has won the starting spot and is averaging 12 points a game. Legion is averaging 13 and has filled in great for Aguirre. Macklin has not been as productive as expected, but its still early. I am very excited about these players and have great expectations for their future in Bean Town.”
The future looks bright in Boston. They may make the playoffs and the oldest starter will be only 24.
