Most Vulnerable Position award goes to Portland’s GM as Kevin Garnett seems to be in a coma over in Portland. Garnett’s numbers have been on a downward slide over the last three seasons and so has Portland’s record. His points per game have been getting increasingly worse. After the 2008 season his points per game dropped by three going into the 2009 season and going into the 2010 season his points per game dropped by four. If this pace were to keep, then Garnett wouldn’t even be averaging 20ppg by next season. Is age the reason for this decline of the best player in the game? Or is Garnett just in need of a change of scenery? Even if Garnett were to be on the trading block is there a market out there for the aging star? Garnett has been a loyal and hardworking player for the city of Portland and has been trying to deliver them a championship but is Portland doing enough to surround him?
The last trade that Portland made was acquiring Kevin Durant who looks to be a good scoring small forward in his first season starting. The second to last deal that Portland made was acquiring Luke Ridnour for Danny Fortson which was 3 seasons ago. So there hasn’t been too much done to improve the team or reassemble the team to win a championship. Devin Harris and Brandon Rush are a young dynamic duo in the back court but other than those two the guard depth is weak. Thirty-six year old Small Forward Rasheed Wallace won’t be around too much longer and is averaging 12 points and 4 rebounds a game playing as the team’s starting center. Portland has not stockpiled on draft picks either and currently has their 1st and 2nd round picks for 2011, ’12, and ’13. If Garnett was traded they could add a true center along with plenty of depth and draft picks but Garnett remains untouchable. It wouldn’t make sense to start trying to build around Garnett now to win a championship but instead to start to build around budding star Brandon Rush. A change of scenery for Garnett could prove to be positive for him as well as the Blazers’ franchise. The people of Portland are getting restless and might start an outcry for change in management if changes are continued to be not made. Despite Garnett’s FG%, RPG, APG, SPG, PPG all going down he could still lead a team to a championship but that team will never be Portland and Portland will never win a championship with Garnett.
